Military Disaster—How Close Are We?

Does the general public have any idea how close we are to a military disaster? The Obama administration has announced the dismissal of 500 U.S. Army majors. They have been dismantling the armed forces as fast as the public will tolerate. But I ask, how can that be? The public has just not been kept informed of all the cuts.

Some of the latest actions include:

  • massive cuts in the defense budget

  • unilateral reductions in the U. S. nuclear arsenal

  • softening sanctions against Iran’s nuclear weapons development

  • ignoring North Korea’s deployment plans for nuclear ICBMs

  • no appropriate response to China’s aggressions towards our allies

  • alienating regional allies, e. g. Israel

  • failure to develop an adequate anti-missile shield

  • turning a blind eye to growing foreign military growth in Latin America

As the supposed “rulers” of this country, we should ask where all the media attention is that should be focused on these military affairs and our government’s response to them. Instead, we are asked to believe that a major war is not possible. Yet nothing seems to be preventing Russia from invading other countries. Nothing deters them from assisting others in shooting down a civilian airliner.

And what about China? They have taken control over large areas of the seas. They have increased espionage in the U. S., and built up their nuclear and military strength at an alarming rate.

We are supposed to believe that drones are the answer. Save our Troops! Take out a few targets and it’s all under control. It’s worked well against Islamic extremists…NOT! They are stronger now than ever. No one thinks twice about executing U. S. citizens. Why not? Maybe they know nothing will be done against them.

We are getting closer and closer to a threat that the U. S. will simply be unable to defend against, be it a force of arms, or some other terrorist action. Will we wake up in time? Not if current trends are any indication. Maybe the survivalist groups have it right after all.

Homemade Browning Sauce (Kitchen Bouquet)

Kitchen Bouquet (an ingredient in my pot roast post) is a seasoning and browning sauce primarily composed of caramel with vegetable flavorings. It has been used as a flavoring addition for gravies and other foods since approximately 1879.

–From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Although it’s available in most US supermarkets, here’s a DIY version.

Paleo/Primal Lifestyle Journey

A paleolithic lifestyle (also known as paleo or primal lifestyle) refers to living as humans presumably did in the paleolithic era (Old Stone Age), or attempting to recreate such a lifestyle in the present day. The rationale for such an approach is that humans have evolved for millions of years in a paleolithic environment. Therefore, their body and mind can be expected to be adequately adapted to the concomitant hunter-gatherer lifestyle.

~From Wikipedia - The Free Encyclopedia

Agriculture, on the other hand, only appeared about 10 000 years ago at the beginning of the neolithic era, and industrial society only about 200 years ago. Proponents of a paleolithic lifestyle assert that insufficient time has passed for humans to adapt to the changes brought by farming and industrialization, leading to a misfit between modern lifestyle and the human genome.

The Hungry Wolf  is a journal of my experiences while implementing the paleo/primal lifestyle guidelines in my own life. I am a Type II diabetic and am actively looking for a lifestyle change that makes sense, is easy to follow and not overly restrictive, and most importantly, helps me control my disease.

Some Thoughts as I Go Primal/Paleo

sheesh…is that good English?! I hardly think so, but it’s how I see things lately. Changing over to the primal/paleo lifestyle is going to be a long process, weaning off all those “wonderful” foods I had learned to love over the last 6 decades. I’m trying all kinds of new things and am surprising even myself with how good these items taste—not to mention how much better I feel.

To keep my taste buds truly satisfied, I have started using a clone of Emeril’s EssenceLOTS!  It adds so much great zing to my food…well…BAM! (Sorry…couldn’t resist!) Check it out in the recipe section.

I have also been trying my hand at almond milk and a DIY V8 juice. The results have been fabulous! One tip for others trying to find a better, more economical way to strain pulp without the expense of a nut milk bag—go to Wal-Mart and buy a pack of flour sack towels. They are about $ 5.00 for 5 towels, not to mention they are sturdy AND reusable!!

UPDATE: Shortly after posting this, one of my chores was to make my current supply of “V8″ juice. I used the flour sack towel placed inside a sieve to strain my juice. The resulting juice was almost entirely pulp-free. (More information and the recipe is to follow.) This was a good to confirm because now there is no need to augment my Ninja® Mega Kitchen System with a juicer. The blender handled everything, even the ice, without a hitch. But, hey, if you like pulp in your juice there’s no need to strain a thing.

Is Primal the Way to Go??

WOW…so much reading…so many contradictory views, opinions and “facts”. It’s hard to believe that mainstream thinking can be so diametrically opposite from what appears to be the ways of our distant ancestors.

How is it that the organizations we depend on to provide us with information to help us stay healthy and manage our medical treatment and care can make claims unsubstantiated by any scientific facts (or even contradicted by facts)? And even worse, how is it we allow it to happen?

What I know is I have begun to transition into this new primal lifestyle and can say, very subjectively, that I have already begun to sense positive changes in my own health. Are these changes real? lasting? I don’t know. I do know that standard practices and advice have yet to produce the same results—even using all the modern medications my doctors insist are just what I need to survive to a ripe old age.

“Live Long—Drop Dead”

I will be following these changes carefully and reporting the results as I can confirm each one. I will be posting recipes I find intriguing, tasty and capable of replacing my current favorites—and hopefully adjusting some of those favorites to fit into this new regimen. As a long-time Type II diabetic I sure hope that this primal lifestyle is indeed the way to go!

Homemade Worcestershire Sauce

This is a simple, Primal/Paleo friendly, homemade Worcestershire sauce. It  contains a lot of ingredients, but it really is deceptively simple to make.

Serving size: approximately 1 tablespoon

Ingredients

Homemade Ketchup

There’s no need to give up ketchup if you can opt for this homemade (but delicious) 5-minute variety. You control all the elements of this ketchup, from the sweetness to the sodium levels. It’s so easy—there’s no reason not to have the perfect ketchup for your family—something that’s difficult to accomplish with store-bought.

Want a low-sodium variety? Reduce the salt to your taste.

It’s Been THAT Long!?

I Just logged on after reading an email and could NOT believe the date of my last post! Where did time go? Reality has set in ad I’m so disappointed in myself…letting work, health, finances and a myriad of other life problems and obstacles keep from this endeavor for so long.

I have been hearing so much lately about a couple of lifestyle changes—the Paleo and Primal lifestyles. I’m wondering if there are any “practitioner’s” out there who would be willing to share their experiences and comments about this “movement”.

The idea of returning to a diet based on what our distant ancestors survived on in order to maintain a healthier existence is intriguing. At this stage in my life, it has become more and more apparent that I need to make some changes.

I would like to know if the real-life application of this lifestyle is more expensive than a normal lifestyle. Does it, in fact, result in a healthier life? Is this dependent on some type of hard-core physical training/exercise program? Is it something that can be accomplished no matter where one lives?

Now that I have my priorities rearranged, I hope to be more diligent in my posting habits. I the meantime, ENJOY LIFE.

Monday: New York stands up for Net Neutrality!

An open email to all New Yorkers-

[1]Save the Date: New York Speaks on Net Neutrality and Comcast

Question: Where’s FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler?

Answer: Who knows?

Here’s what we do know: Thousands of people like you have urged him to host public hearings in your communities on Net Neutrality and the proposed Comcast-Time Warner Cable merger.

And Demand Progress and our coalition partners have sent formal invitations, issued requests via the press and at rallies, and teamed up with other public interest organizations to push Wheeler to meet with you.

The response? Nothing. But that’s not going to stop us.

While we hope Wheeler and his colleagues will show up, we’re holding our own event in Brooklyn with or without them.

[2]Speak Out With Us in Brooklyn on Mon., Oct. 27.

Here are the details:

What: New York Speaks: A Hearing on Our Rights to Connect and Communicate
When: Mon., Oct. 27, from 6-8 p.m.
Where: Dweck Center, Brooklyn Central Library, 10 Grand Army Plaza
Who: We’re partnering with our allies at Common Cause, Consumers Union, Daily Kos, Free Press and the Media Action Grassroots Network to host this event.

RSVP: [3]Sign up here

Bring: Your message for Wheeler on a big, bold sign.

While the chairman hasn’t responded to our invitations, he has had time to attend gatherings our Net Neutrality opponents have planned.

Millions of people have spoken out to save Net Neutrality and stop Comcast. Obama has expressed his own support for the open Internet—multiple times.

While we don’t know where Wheeler is, one thing is clear: He’s ignoring the public he’s supposed to serve and the president who appointed him.

[4]Join us in Brooklyn to speak out.

Hope to see you there.
